Muesli bars have become a go-to munchable marvel for those seeking a quick and easy energy boost in between meals. However, not all muesli bars are created equal. Uncle Tobys Nutrition Ambassador, Kathleen Alleaume shares her top six nutritional must-haves when it comes to these on-the-go snacks.
1. Look out for whole grains.
For a healthy dose of goodness, seek out muesli bars containing at least 50% whole grains. A common whole grain found in muesli bars is the humble oat - a nutrition superstar in its own league. Other sources of whole grain may be wheat and brown rice.
2. Supercharge the fibre content.
Fibre is good for us and on average we don’t get nearly as much as we need for good health1. Including fibre in your snacking routine helps maintain digestive balance. Look for bars with at least 2 grams of fibre per bar.
3. Sugar.
Choose bars with lower added sugars for a more wholesome option. The total average amount of sugar in the Uncle Tobys muesli bars ranges from 4.1g to 5.8g per bar – that’s between 1 and 1 ¾ teaspoons per serve. The Uncle Tobys Protein bars are similar, with between 4.4g and 6.0g per bar or 1.1 – 1½ teaspoons on average per serve*.
4. Sensible portions.
For a portion-controlled snack, 600 kilojoules is usually a sensible choice for a snack.
5. Read the ingredients list.
To pick a healthier snack, look for a health star rating and a positive benefit – like a source of fibre, protein or wholegrains. Check for muesli bars that have a higher quantity of wholegrains, nuts or seeds and contain no artificial colours or flavours.
6. Lunchbox friendly.
Perfect for school lunch boxes, Uncle Tobys oat-based muesli bars are a wholesome and tasty snack that is convenient and kid-friendly.
